One side dropped, the door is crooked, or there is a frayed steel cable hanging loose. Cables are a fast repair and a genuinely unsafe one to leave.
The lift cables are the link between the spring system and the door itself. A steel cable runs from the bottom bracket on each side up to a grooved drum on the torsion shaft. As the springs unwind, the drums wind the cables in and the door goes up. They are doing a large share of the actual lifting work.
Because they work in a matched pair, a failure on one side is immediately visible. The door goes up crooked, one bottom corner drops, and the door often jams in the opening at an angle. That is not a cosmetic problem. A door held by one cable is carrying its weight through parts never intended to take it.
Cables fail in three ways: fraying from riding over a worn drum or a misaligned pulley, unwinding from the drum when a door is left slack, and corrosion.
Corrosion is the one that matters most here. Tulsa summers are humid, garages are not conditioned, and the cable sits in that air for years. Rust starts inside the strands where you cannot see it, so a cable can look serviceable and still be well down on strength. There is a balance reason as well. A new cable and a stretched old cable are effectively different lengths, so the door hangs unevenly, loads one side of the track, and wears the rollers unevenly. Matched cables keep the door square in the opening, which is what the rest of the hardware assumes.
A cable rarely fails on its own. Local techs inspect the drums for groove wear and for the burr that chews cable, check the bottom brackets, look at the shaft and bearings, and confirm the springs are still delivering the tension the door needs.
Then the door is re-balanced. A properly balanced door will stay put when you stop it halfway with the opener disconnected. If it drifts up or falls, the spring tension is wrong for the door's actual weight, and that is what will destroy the next set of cables.

Persistent fraying is a symptom, not the fault. It usually means a worn drum groove, a bent track, an out-of-square opening, or spring tension that is wrong for the door. Replacing cables without fixing that just resets the clock.
Please do not. If the car has to come out, pull the red release cord and lift by hand with help, watching for the door dropping on the unsupported side. Otherwise leave it closed.
