Crooked, jammed, or hanging at an angle. A door off its track is the one failure where using the opener again usually makes the bill larger.
A sectional garage door is held in its opening by rollers riding inside steel tracks. When a roller leaves the track, the door is no longer supported the way it was designed to be, and the weight starts going somewhere it should not: onto a single hinge, onto a bent track lip, or onto the cable on one side.
The reason we ask people to stop pressing the button is simple arithmetic. The opener will happily apply a couple of hundred pounds of force to a door that is already jammed. That is what turns a reseat into a bent-section replacement, and occasionally into a door that comes down hard. If your door is off track, disconnect the opener with the red release cord and leave it alone until someone looks at it.
The most common cause anywhere is a vehicle bumping the door or the track bracket, often at low speed and often without anybody mentioning it. After that: a broken cable letting one side drop, worn rollers with collapsed bearings, and loose lag bolts letting the vertical track drift away from the jamb.
In Tulsa there are two more. Straight-line wind pushing on a door that is not braced can flex it enough to pop a roller at the top corner. And a door that has iced to the slab overnight, then been lifted anyway, racks sideways as the frozen edge lets go unevenly.
Here is the failure we find in the metro that shops elsewhere rarely look for. Oklahoma clay is expansive, meaning it swells when it takes water and shrinks back when it dries. The slab and the framing move with it, a little each season, and over a decade or two a garage opening that was square when it was built no longer is.
A door in an out-of-square opening binds harder on one side than the other. The rollers on the tight side wear faster, the cable on that side takes more load, and eventually something lets go and the door comes off. If local techs reseat the door and replace the roller without checking the opening, you will see them again. So local techs check the frame for square and plumb as part of the call, and tell you if the real problem is the building rather than the door.
Local techs secure and support the door first, then release tension where it is needed so nothing is under load while they work. The door comes back into the track, then local techs inspect every part that the derailment could have damaged: rollers, hinges, the track itself, the cables and the bottom brackets.
Bent track can sometimes be dressed straight and sometimes has to be replaced, and they will tell you honestly which one you are looking at. A dressed track that is still slightly out will chew through new rollers. Then the door is balance-checked by hand and the safety reversal is tested before local techs call it done.
We would rather you did not. The door is heavy, the cables may be under tension, and the usual outcome of a DIY reseat is a door that binds again within weeks because the underlying cause was not found. If you need the car out, pull the red release cord and only lift by hand with help.
Most often a cable broke on one side and dropped it, or a roller bearing collapsed. In this metro it is also worth checking whether the opening has gone out of square from soil movement, because that loads one side of the door continuously until something fails.
Usually not. Most off-track calls are a reseat plus rollers and hinges. Replacement becomes the honest answer when a section is bent badly enough to have lost its structural stiffness, which is normally the result of the opener being used after the door came off.
Off-track doors are a priority call. A door hanging at an angle is a safety issue and often leaves the house open, so these go to the front of the queue including evenings and weekends.
